Hantavirus prevention
The single most effective protection against hantavirus is reducing contact with rodents and their excreta. Most exposures happen during cleanup of rodent-infested spaces.
Keep rodents out
- Seal holes ¼ inch or larger in foundations, walls, and around utility pipes.
- Store food in rodent-proof containers; keep pet food sealed.
- Remove brush, woodpiles, and trash that provide harborage near homes.
- Use snap traps; check daily and dispose of carcasses safely.
Safe cleanup
- Ventilate the area for at least 30 minutes before entering.
- Do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings — this aerosolizes virus particles.
- Wear rubber or plastic gloves and an N95 respirator (minimum).
- Spray droppings, nests, and surfaces with a 1:10 bleach-water solution. Let soak 5 minutes.
- Wipe up with paper towels; double-bag waste; wash hands thoroughly.
Camping & cabins
- Inspect cabins before sleeping; air them out and clean before staying.
- Avoid sleeping on the ground in areas with rodent activity.
- Store food in sealed containers off the floor.
